Bone Grafting Can Help You Qualify for Dental Implants

Bone Grafting and Sinus Lifts

When you have missing teeth, the bone in those areas starts to resorb (shrink) away, weakening the jaws and compromising the stability of surrounding teeth. If upper teeth are involved, even the linings of the sinus cavity can start to drop into the space where a tooth root once sat. Previously, the lining rested above the tooth. This can create a problem if you’re looking to get dental implants , because the artificial root can puncture the sinus lining and cause the implant site to become infected and or fail altogether. Fortunately, Dr. Carlos Medina provides comprehensive implant supportive therapies including bone grafting and sinus lifts to make dental implants a reality for people with extensive bone loss.

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a process where osseous powders or a bone transplant is placed in the area of bone loss to counteract the effects following a tooth extraction or periodontal disease. In many cases the bone graft can be placed at the same time a tooth is pulled or the dental implant is placed, aiding in healing and preventing additional tooth loss. It makes it possible for Dr. Medina to provide dental implant treatments to people who might not otherwise qualify for implants because of extensive bone resorption.

What is a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lifts involve raising the lining of the sinus cavity and creating space for an implant to be placed without rupturing the sinus membrane. They are often paired with a bone graft, which is placed in the area that the sinus lining sunk into. During the procedure, Dr. Medina creates a small window in the gums and bone, accessing the sinus lining and gently lifting it up higher. In most cases, sinus lifts bring the cavity lining closer to where it once was before the adjacent tooth was lost.
